Donghae’s Largest Traditional Festival, Mureungje, Returns on September 26

The 2024 Donghae Mureungje Festival will take place from September 26 to 29 in Donghae City, Gangwon Province.

As Donghae’s largest traditional cultural festival, Mureungje has been held every autumn since 1984, celebrating the unity and prosperity of the citizens of Donghae, named after the famous Mureung Valley.

This year’s theme, “A Different Color of Donghae, Palette Festival,” aims to capture the beauty of the city’s four seasons and showcase them through diverse festival activities.

Key events include traditional rites such as the Sansinje (Mountain Spirit Ceremony) and the Bountiful Harvest Ritual, as well as performances like international cultural exchange shows, the opening ceremony, drone light show, romantic concerts, comedy shows, dance festivals, and the Donghae Song Contest. Traditional folk games such as janggi (Korean chess), yutnori (stick-tossing game), and tuho (arrow-throwing game) will also be featured.

Visitors can enjoy various hands-on experiences such as food tasting, folk experience zones, wellness centers, and special photo zones. There will also be exhibitions, including the Donghae Art Festival, Mureung Painting Contest, and a stone exhibition.

The 2024 Donghae Mureungje Festival promises to be a vibrant event that celebrates the rich cultural heritage of the region while providing entertainment for people of all ages.
