Hanbok Contest: Tradition Meets Elegance at the Palace

The Korea Heritage Service (KHS) and the Korea Heritage Agency (KHA) have announced the launch of a photo contest titled “Beautiful Hanbok Stories in K-Royal Palaces.”

This contest, which will run from August 5 to September 8, 2024, invites participants to submit photos taken within the past year of people wearing Hanbok at one of the four major palaces—Gyeongbokgung, Changdeokgung, Deoksugung, or Changgyeonggung—or at Jongmyo Shrine. The contest is open to both Korean citizens and international residents in Korea.

The photo contest is a part of the tenth K-Royal Culture Festival, scheduled to take place from October 9 to 13, 2024. The festival aims to promote interest in Korea’s royal palaces and highlight the beauty of Hanbok, Korea’s traditional attire. A total of 50 winning entries will be selected through a two-stage evaluation process by a panel of experts.

The grand prize winner will receive a custom-made premium Hanbok voucher worth KRW 2 million (approximately USD 1,446), while other winners will receive traditional craft gift sets and cultural gift certificates.

The winning photos will be exhibited at Gyejodang Hall in Gyeongbokgung Palace from October 9 to 13, during the K-Royal Culture Festival. This exhibition will provide visitors with a unique opportunity to appreciate the harmony between Hanbok and the historic palace settings.

In addition to the photo contest, the Royal Palaces and Tombs Center will offer various programs during the K-Royal Culture Festival to celebrate the beauty of Hanbok. These programs will include interactive experiences and lectures, as well as free Hanbok rentals and a commemorative photo event during Hanbok Culture Week, which will take place from October 14 to 20, 2024.
