Silla Five Performances for Chuseok
Silla Five Performances Chuseok Special in Gyeongju Gyochon Village
The 2024 Gyochon Cultural Performance “Silla Five Performances” (Silla Ogi) Chuseok Special will be held from September 14 to 16 at Gyochon Hanok Village Plaza in Gyeongju, Gyeongsangbuk-do.
The performances, which are free to attend, will take place daily at 3 PM during the Chuseok holiday. Please note that performances will be canceled in the event of rain.
“Silla Five Performances” is a creative traditional play that reinterprets five types of traditional games mentioned in the “Hyangakjabyeong” by Choe Chiwon, as recorded in the Samguk Sagi (Chronicles of the Three Kingdoms).
The play tells the story of Choe Chiwon, who, after returning to Gyeongju from his studies in Tang China, is mesmerized by a performance by a troupe of entertainers in Gyochon Village and responds with a poem. The performance consists of five main traditional games: Kemhwoan, Daemyun, Sanye, Worjun, and Sockdock.
In “Kemhwoan,” performers skillfully juggle several golden balls in the air, showcasing impressive dexterity and focus. “Daemyun” features dancers wearing golden masks in a ritual dance meant to ward off evil spirits, highlighting dynamic movements and mysterious masks. “Sanye” is a lion mask dance, where the performer shakes the lion’s head and tail, symbolizing strength and courage.
“Worjun” is a humorous and satirical mask dance that engages with the audience, bringing laughter and interaction. Finally, “Sockdock” is a fast-paced group dance performed to the rhythm of drums, emphasizing teamwork and energy.
Gyochon Village is easily accessible by public transportation from Gyeongju Station and the intercity bus terminals. For those driving, the village is approximately a 10-minute drive from the Gyeongju IC.
